What is a winter walking and activity holiday?
A winter walking and activity holiday is a chance to experience the High Tatras in winter — walking on groomed trails, snowshoeing, exploring snowy landscapes, and enjoying cold-season activities at a relaxed but active pace. This isn’t a technical mountaineering trip; instead, it’s an immersive winter adventure that lets you enjoy crisp mountain air, snowy views, and peaceful winter nature.
Who are these holidays suitable for?
These holidays are ideal for adults (18+) who are fit and enjoy outdoor activity in cold weather. You do not need prior snow hiking or winter mountaineering experience, as we don’t use technical equipment such as ice axes, crampons, or ropes on our standard routes. We will need the slip on spikes for our walks, however. The focus is on accessible winter walking and snowshoeing, suitable for those in good physical condition. If you lead an active lifestyle and are comfortable walking for several hours in winter conditions, you should enjoy this trip.
What is the weather like and how cold does it get?
Winter temperatures in the High Tatras can vary widely, typically ranging from around +5°C in daylight to as low as -15°C or even -20°C at night. Conditions can change rapidly depending on wind, altitude, and weather systems. You should be prepared for true winter conditions — cold air, snow, frost, and possibly wind chill that makes it feel colder than the thermometer shows. Full details about winter clothing and layering recommendations will be sent to you in your detailed winter kit list prior to departure.
Can I expect snow?
Yes — snow is a large part of the winter experience here. Trails will usually be covered in snow, and snowshoes are commonly used for deeper snow or ungroomed sections.
What activities are included on a winter holiday?
Winter walking holidays typically include: Guided or self-guided walking/hiking, optional snowshoeing, ice dome visit, sledging, snowy viewpoints, …
Do I need experience with snowshoeing?
No previous snowshoeing experience is required. Snowshoeing is straightforward and easy to learn; it’s similar to walking but with footwear that keeps you on top of the snow. Your guide or local team will show you how to use snowshoes and make sure you’re comfortable before setting off.
What should I wear and bring?
You’ll receive a detailed winter kit list and packing guide about two months before departure, but generally, you should be prepared with: Winter hiking boots with good ankle support, Warm layers (base layer, insulating mid-layer, shell jacket), Waterproof and windproof outer clothing, Winter gloves, hat, and neck warmer, Sunglasses or protective eyewear for glare, Daypack for personal items, Water bottle and snacks.
The kit list will go into far greater detail and help you prepare properly for the weather and days out in snow.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes — we strongly recommend travel insurance that covers winter activities, medical costs, trip cancellation, and emergency assistance. We recommend looking at one of the insurance options here.
Is snow guaranteed?
Snowfall and conditions depend on the season and weather patterns. While many winter holidays enjoy good snow cover, no guarantee can be made in advance. We plan routes based on seasonal norms and local knowledge to give you the best winter experience possible.
What is the pace of the holiday?
Winter walking holidays are active but relaxed. Days include several hours outdoors with plenty of breaks to enjoy hot drinks, scenic spots, and time in cosy mountain huts. You choose your own pace, and guides will accommodate group needs.
What happens if I arrive to less snow than expected?
If snow cover is lighter than usual, your itinerary may be adjusted for alternative scenic routes or comfortable winter walks that still offer a great experience. Our local team will always aim to give you the best possible winter adventure.
Are flights included?
No — flights are not included. As with other trips, each traveller is responsible for booking these themselves.
Is this suitable for solo travellers?
Absolutely. Many guests join winter walking holidays solo. The atmosphere is friendly, supportive, and social without pressure — perfect if you want to meet like-minded travellers.
